Silicon Beach: 5 LA Tech Companies We Love

1. Hulu

The combo of Hulu and Apple TV is pretty epic. For us, having Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV, and an iPad is as close to entertainment heaven as one can get. Although Hulu is far from a true blue LA garage startup, it’s still arguably the most powerful startup in LA. We expect some big changes that will make Hulu the future of television.

2. Maker Studios

Going off the theme of entertainment, Maker Studios is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Maker Studios makes tons of content exclusively for YouTube. You can check out all the awesome content they are pumping out on a daily basis here. Youtube has hours of hilarious, awe-inspiring, educational, and overall entertaining content. Maker Studio helps brings YouTube’s entertainment value alongside major players like aforementioned Hulu & Netflix as opposed to a simple platform to share short clips.

3. Lynda.com

Lynda is really great if you are a tech nerd like us. This platform provides more access to software and tech training than one could ever handle. It’s a subscription based business that will help educate you on anything and everything. Check out classes like “Intro to HTML and CSS” which provides all the PSDs (exercise files) so you really get a feel for building an actual website. Almost all their courses include actionable material so you can learn by doing. Check it out now and let the nerding begin!

4. Nasty Gal

This sounds like a dirty site but we promise it’s far from it. No one knows fashion like Angelenos making Silicon Beach the holy grail for fashion related startups. On top of the fashion startups in the LA area sits Nasty Gal. They are the next BIG fashion brand that will join the likes of ShoeDazzle, Shop-Hers, and Zappos.

5. Surf Air

Surf Air is an all-you-can-fly private air travel membership that provides business and leisure travelers with exclusive, hassle-free air travel, saving valuable time and money. The company provides first-class service on executive aircraft to and from convenient local airports in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles metro area, with extended service to additional locations to follow. Operating out of local mid-sized airports, Surf Air offers an affordable and sophisticated travel experience for frequent regional travelers.
